A Fleet disappear

Is there any way to make a fleet that is on the return trip just disappear?? I only ask because I had set someone up on there return flight from an attack, and timed it to hit 2 seconds after it landed. Then I checked with a scanner to be sure. But when I when to check the battle report. It was no fleet for me to destroy. I know that there is no way to do a safe flight that fast, so what happen??
