Your initial suggestions remind me of a certain other game of this type -Cough.- But yeah, something like carriers and more varied types of ships would be nice. There's a really decent game out there for PC that's space based empire building, it along with it's expansion should cost around $25-$30 right now, but anyways, it has the ability to customize ships via interchangeable mission sections. It's pretty good and has online play, but much like this game, it also lacks my favourite ship, CARRIERS. I too want carriers very badly. I love 'em. Nothing says you're screwed like launching swarms of fighters and bombers from a massive capital ship. I love fleet based RTS games with a passion and carriers are always a must for me, or something awesome like customization. (Also on the aforementioned game, you can shoot the turrets off ships with concentrated fire and the guns on your ships aim for where on the enemy ship you click....how awesome is that?)
