does the resources put toward a research lab go for points in the building or research section

why do you want to know? My guess is that research lab points go towards buildings, the research that you do in the labs points go towards you research.

If you want points, build a huge fleet! It is easy to build points by building ships, any ship. Build 100,000 small cargo ships like another player who shot up in the ranks did. Not only will you sky rocket in points, but your fleet ranking will be in the top 5.
